Western Maryland Shay #6 Elkins Trip
For the first time in over 30 years a steam engine returned to the town of Elkins, WV. Built in 1945 Shay #6 was the last geared engine built by the Lima Locomotive Works., Lima, OH. Shipped to Elkins, WV on May 14, 1945 Shay #6 was quickly put to work on the lines Chaffe Brach hauling coal. Having a service life of four short years number 6 was stored and then donated to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad museum in 1953. In 1981 a trade agreement was made sending former Cass Shay #1 and a porter 0-4-0 to Baltimore in exchange for the Big 6. Western Maryland 6 has attracted visitors from all over to Cass, WV to see the mighty engine. Enjoy the photo's below documenting this historic run to Elkins. Shay #6 receives water from both the Belington and Junior Fire Departments at Belington, WV. A big thanks to all of the fire departments which helped thoughout the weekend, without there help this trip would not have been possible.
